Grade 6: Experimenting with Line
Students explored the Element of Line and discovered the unique qualities of their drawing pencils in this Nonobjective Drawing exercise. Students used Line, Shape and Value to create a unique composition that used Repetition to create Unity in their artwork. Students advanced their art vocabulary and defined the Elements of Art.

Grade 6: Positive and Negative Space Collage

Students furthered their knowledge of The Elements of Art and created abstract artworks that explored Shape, Space and Composition. We defined a variety of art literacy terms related to the project and surveyed artists, visual illusions and Notan Art to further our understanding of Positive and Negative Space. Drawing with our scissors was emphasized as students considered visual balance and how to organize their elements to create a unified, dynamic arrangement.

Grade 6 and 7: Art in Response to Mother Nature
Students created artwork in response to an experience they had with  Mother Nature during Hurricane Sandy. Students were encouraged to explore their personal expression and create symbolic artworks that conveyed a feeling or represented an experience during that difficult time.

Grade 6: Cupcake Drawings
Students acquired drawing skills on how to draw a 3-D form on a 2-D surface for this project. We studied how to draw and shade a sphere and cylinder and they were introduced to drawing One-Point Perspective before they designed their own cupcake(s).  Additionally, students reviewed the color wheel and color theory and learned about warm and cool colors, complementary colors and how to create a harmonious color palette. Students used color pencil and/or oil pastels and learned about each medium to create these whimsical, colorful cupcake drawings.

Grade 7: Portraiture
Students learned about Proportion and how to better draw a portrait and further their drawing skills. We used charcoal, charcoal pencils and graphite pencils to create these portraits, which could be a self-portrait or a portrait of someone they admired or were inspired by.  Students learned how to develop their highlights and shadows to create volume and realism in these drawings, as well as the relationships between the features of the face in terms of size and placement.

Grade 7: Abstract Collage Experiments
Students created their own unique papers by experimenting with a variety of media to create textures and abstract patterns. Next, students took these papers, cut them up and arranged them using The Principles of Art to create an abstract artwork that represented a mood, feeling or landscape in a unified composition. We examined the collages of artists Pablo Picasso, Kurt Schwitters and other modern and contemporary artists for inspiration.  Next, students will create collage narratives and learn how to integrate imagery from a variety of sources to tell a story of a special time in their lives or a past or current historical event(s) as the subject for the next step in learning how to collage.

Grade 8: Animal Drawings
Students created charcoal drawings of animals with an emphasis on simulated texture and shading with value. We began the project with warm-up exercises that used charcoal pencils to draw simulated texture swatches of animal fur, skin, and scales. Students chose an animal to base their drawing upon using black and white reference images as their guides. With a light pencil sketch indicating the basic shape of the animal, they added a wide range of values and simulated texture to their drawings to create the illusion of volume and depth on a two-dimensional surface. These student artists enriched their visual arts vocabulary, learning terms such as implied texture, simulated texture, and value.
